We've all been there: your friend picks a chi-chi restaurant; you order a salad and glass of Pinot Grigio; she orders tuna tartare, steak and two martinis -- oh, and the dessert special. The bill comes and she says, "Let's split it." Sometimes you just have to leave your sense of equality at home by bucking up and paying, but not always. Here are our tips for paying what you owe, and only what you owe. |

When the waiter brings the bill, reach for it first so you know what you owe. Don't be too aggressive in your grabbing, though -- you don't want to imply that you're getting the bill. Then put in your amount or say "I owe $30" so it's established that you're paying for your share only.
Carry cash. The reason we split most of the time is because we plunk down credit cards and it's just too annoying to say to the waiter, "Can you put $22.50 on this one and $38.75 on this?" If you know what you owe, throw that down and do not forget the tax and tip!
If you ordered more, don't be cheap; pay for what you had.

If you're having a group dinner, or taking someone out for his or her birthday, try to establish the payment beforehand. (Before arriving at the restaurant or before you order, let all guests know that you're splitting dinner evenly.)
If someone forgets to chip in tax and tip, politely ask your fellow diners to buck up for the extra cost. Call out how good the waiter was and that you don't want to gyp him. Or simply say, "We don't have enough to cover tax; can everyone put in a little extra?"
If you ever feel awkward asking to pay only for your share or if you're in a professional situation, suck it up. You'll stew over the lost money for a few hours, but you'll forget about it in the long run. It's better to dole out a little extra money than come across as a big tightwad. |
