Dr. Pratima Raichur has written the book on looking and feeling your best –literally. Absolute Beauty is a feel-good guide based on the principles of Ayurvedic medicine and Pratima, an Ayurvedic physician, chemist, botanist, and doctor of naturopathy, was generous enough to fill us in about this holistic science (that’s over 5,000 years old!) and give us tips on how to live beautifully and within the laws of nature, which is no easy feat these days. Read on:

For those not in the know, what is Ayurvedic medicine and how can we incorporate that into our beauty routine?

Ayurveda is a holistic science over 5,000 years old that carries a profound body of knowledge for understanding ourselves within the laws of nature. According to this ancient wisdom, each individual and all of nature is comprised of the five fundamental elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These elements uniquely design each one of us, creating a distinct blueprint known as our Dosha.

Knowing your Dosha will help you determine lifestyle choices, nutrition and skincare products that will benefit you most for optimal wellness and beauty.

There are 3 main Doshas:
Vata (Air + Space)
Pitta (Fire + Water)
Kapha (Water + Earth)

Despite differences in doshas, what’s a skincare product that can benefit anyone?

There are certain ayurvedic formulas that are considered tridoshic, meaning these special herbal nutrients, botanicals and essential oils are harvested and consciously combined to balance all three doshas. The PRATIMA line has both customized dosha-specific formulations as well as tridoshic blends.

Some tridoshic PRATIMA products can be found here.

How can Ayurvedic practices help us achieve balance in our often-crazy lives?

Ayurveda is a science that helps us achieve balance through dosha-specific guidelines that can be applied to every aspect of our lives, from the thoughts you think, the foods you eat, the skincare products you choose to the lifestyle choices you make on a daily as well as seasonal basis.

An example is a person with a primary dosha of Pitta trying to maintain balance in the summertime, which is Pitta season (June through September). During summer months, Pitta energy is prone to increase in everyone, especially those with Pitta predominance. So this person, in order to prevent as well as remedy excess heat, acidity, common skin and emotional imbalances, such as acne, rosacea, rashes, eczema, frustration, irritability etc., should avoid hot, salty, heavy foods and favor cool, bitter and astringent choices, which is known as a Pitta pacifying diet. A good pranayama or breathing technique to cool down the mind and body is: Shitali breathing.

What’s something we should all avoid in our diet? And what can we eat/drink with abandon?

Ayurveda is not a one-size-fits-all approach to health and beauty, but there are certain recommendations that can be applied to most:
- Avoid processed and fried foods, white sugar, white flour, preservatives, canned food, alcohol, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, as well as genetically modified food.
- Drink plenty of water and vegetable juices and eat organic vegetables and fruits recommended for your dosha.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve received and what tip do you pass on the most?

The most important advice I received from my ayurvedic guru and that I pass along most frequently are:
1. Daily and seasonal detoxification and nourishment. The same way we have to clean our face and body externally everyday, we have to also internally cleanse and nourish our systems to maintain optimal health and beauty.
2. Have a positive attitude, meditate, relax and breathe. Because thought is a vibration, vibration converts into energy, energy converts into matter and matter converts into the physical manifestation of who you are.

Is beauty really mind over matter? Meaning, if we think positive, can we really look better?

Yes, thought is the most important nutrient for beauty and happiness. It is important that you love yourself and have a positive attitude because this is what you project into the world and people will see this as absolute beauty.
