A Tall Order
Pretty posture is like a booster seat for your ego. And it doesn’t hurt your health, either.

Proper posture

Your mother was on to something. All those years of nagging you to stand up straight might have actually paid off. Proper posture can make you look taller, thinner in an instant, and sure of yourself. And ask anyone, confidence is sexy. Straightening up can be good for your health, too, ensuring that your joints don't wear abnormally, which can lead to arthritis. It correctly aligns your bones and joints, which results in less fatigue. Maintaining alignment also keeps your spine out of funky positions that can lead to constricted blood vessels and nerves, and problems with muscles, discs and joints, which can lead to headaches, lethargy and even problems with organs and breathing. Below, some pointers on perfect posture in case you ignored Mom the first go-around.

Walk the Walk

As if you didn’t have enough on your mind, remembering to keep your chin in, head high and shoulder blades back probably falls to the bottom of your daily to-do list. But make it a priority and you’ll immediately see and feel the difference in how you present yourself. When walking, tune into what’s going on below the belt. Your feet should point straight ahead, not out to the side, and your knees should be lined up over your second toe (you may need to turn the knee outward consciously in order to line your foot up properly). Don’t lock your knees as you step forward, but keep them slightly bent. Take a cue from our current fave runway rockstar Agyness Deyn. This alluring Anglo commands the stage with her pinched back and lowered chin.

Head Over Heels

Add to the complexity of carriage a woman’s right to shoes and you’ve got a spiky situation. But don’t let a few extra inches derail you. Pull your belly button in towards your spine. This will straighten out a heel-induced hollowed back. And if you feel confident enough to challenge Gisele to a walkoff in these puppies, you’ve accomplished a small "feet."

Muscle Memory

If you’re new to this whole posture thing, start off slow. Otherwise, diving chin-first into a new program might cause initial muscle aches. “Practice standing up straight every so often throughout the day. Bring your shoulders back and tighten your stomach,” says Charlie Dannelly, celebrity fitness trainer for pop-star Brandy and Tony-award winner Kristen Chenoweth. Bonus: you’ll get a flatter tummy.
