New Years 2009 Dress Rehearsal

Sure, you can party like it’s 1999 this year, but just don’t dress like it. Twenty-o-eight has been one for the books, and so should be your final outfit of the year. Here are the dresses to kiss-off every mistake -- and to celebrate every success -- of 2008.

Happy New Year
Poleci
Belle of the Ball
You are not one to be outdone, even by a party’s mirrored ball. Poleci’s (www.poleci.com for stores) sequined black dress will make sure you stay in the spotlight. The sexy straps and plunging neckline may even get you noticed by the party band’s lead guitarist. Nevermind that he’s five bubblies deep, you want to ring in the New Year the right way.

Life of the Party
Reminiscent of the days when we dreamt of Prince Charmings and Happily Ever Afters, Naeem Kahn’s (www.naeemkhan.com for stores) strapless full-skirted dress in bold brush-stroke tulle makes you feel pretty, without too much princess. Another option is Abaeté’s (www.abaete.com for stores) Samira white crinkle chiffon dress (pictured above) that boasts a festive embellishment on the trendy one-shoulder strap. When shopping for this look, keep the hemline cropped just above the knee. Anything longer and someone might ask you if you’ll turn into a pumpkin at midnight.
Stunning Sophisticate
Daring silhouettes and built-in accents will double as flair, which means less need for excessive accessorizing (read: fewer items to pick up off his floor later). Monique Lhullier’s (www.moniquelhuillier.com for stores) navy ruffled-neckline halter frock teaches the diva in all of us that less is more. Step into some killer heels, belt it, and limit jewelry to a bracelet or two. Let the dress do the rest of the work for you.

Generally Speaking
To all you overachievers out there, a word of advice: A loincloth should not moonlight as a dress this New Year’s Eve. Take this opportunity to showcase your fashion prowess, not to look naked on the dance floor. As you can see above, shooting for something shy of slutty doesn’t make you a party pooper. In fact, it makes you a showstopper--in a good way.
