The holidays are once again upon us, and along with the joys of the season come the dread of holiday-food temptation and the inevitable weight gain. But with a few tips and tricks on keeping your appetite in check, you can leave the gobble-gobble up to the turkey and maintain your shape throughout the season.

Eat slowly and you’ll feel more full eating less. Plus, anything worth the extra calories is worth savoring!

The more you try to hold back from eating the foods you crave, the more you’ll want them and the more likely you are to binge. The key is to be selective about your indulgences, so if it’s a slice of that pumpkin pie or a few holiday cookies that you crave … go for it! After all, the holidays only come once a year.

When it comes to keeping your appetite in check, water is your friend. Drinking a glass of water before digging into that cornucopia of food will help fill you up and make you eat less.

Another trick to cutting down on how much food you eat is to use small plates, especially at holiday parties that serve hors d’oeuvres. And if you find yourself refilling your plate one too many times, try sprinkling some SENSA® on your food. It’s a weight-loss system that helps you control your portions by making you feel full faster. It’s easy to use, and it doesn’t restrict you from eating the foods you love.

Stay as far away from the feast as possible. The farther away you are from the food, the less likely you will be to munch and keep coming back for more.

As tempting as it is to go straight for the high-caloric, fatty foods, help yourself to the low-fat, nutrient-rich foods first, such as fruit, veggie platters, beans and leafy greens. It will help you eat less of the unhealthy stuff, plus when you do, you’ll be eating them more for their flavor than to appease your hunger.

It’s hard to eat, drink and mingle at parties when your hands are full. So take your drink wherever you go, and you’ll be less likely to mindlessly munch on food while socializing.

Don’t use the upcoming New Year as a reason to overindulge now and work off the calories later. Stay active, whether it’s a 20-minute power walk or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It will help take off the pressure of losing weight in the New Year.
