Sometimes, the world of skin care confounds even beauty editors. There are so many products, so many ingredients and so many rules. (Not to mention, so many opinions on it all.) We figure: if we get stumped from time to time when it comes to correctly identifying and addressing our own concerns, well, the subject of skin must be downright intimidating for everyone else. But guess what? Thanks to DermStore’s Ask The Esthetician —an online forum run by a licensed esthetician who’s on call to answer all your burning questions, completely free of charge—there’s no need to stress out about your skin. From how to deal with a chemical peel to how to pick the best anti-aging products AND beat hormonal acne, this resource is your best bet for getting sound, professional advice when a standing weekly appointment with your personal facialist just isn’t in the cards (if only!). We encourage you to check it out for yourself—but here are a few sample questions and answers to give you a glimpse into the goldmine of customized knowledge just waiting to be tapped. Enjoy! |

Is there a gentle toner that is safe to use in conjunction with Differin gel?
I’d go with a purifying toner to work with your acne medication, without being too harsh on your skin. I highly recommend trying Murad Clarifying Toner. This cooling toner penetrates pores to dissolve impurities while delivering antioxidants. |

My skin is often itchy and irritated, as though it’s angry. And I get breakouts in one main area: my jawline. When I put on moisturizer, it feels good at first, but within 30 minutes or so it feels dry, itchy and irritated again—and oily to the touch, almost like the cream was never quite absorbed. My skin is often a bit red too. I am naturally blonde with fair skin. Can you recommend the right products for me?
It’s important to keep maintain a good moisture balance even if you’re acne-prone. Usually, when you break out along your jawline, it’s hormonal, so you may want to visit your doctor for any changes. It’s also important to use quality products routinely. I suggest trying Glytone Mild Gel Wash followed with Sea Silk Oil-Free Moisturizer by Cellex-C. Acne will always get worse before it gets better, so make sure you stick with the regimen for a few weeks before making the decision to switch to something else, should you feel your new regimen is not working. |

I recently read the article “Understanding Skin Care Ingredients: Vitamins C, A, K and E” on the DermStore Blog. The article states that it’s “important that you confirm your vitamin C product uses a stabilized form of vitamin C.” Can you give me a list of stabilized forms of vitamin C to look for?
Look for these ingredients, which are stabilized forms of vitamin C:
L-Ascorbic acid of ascorbic acid
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP)
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP)A
Scorbyl Palmitate
When you’re using a vitamin C product, make sure that it’s stored correctly and sealed tightly. Once oxygen gets to the ingredient, it will lose its efficacy. Also, be careful and look out for signs of sensitivity to vitamin C. Many people have reactions to it at a high potency. |

What is the best cleanser to use for oily skin with large pores? The texture of my skin is not as smooth as I would like it to be. Help!

While you can’t do anything to permanently change the size of your pores (that’s determined by genetics) you CAN reduce their appearance. I recommend trying Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel by Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare. These peel pads are great to use as an exfoliant and reduce pore appearance. Plus, they’re full of antioxidants to protect and smooth your skin. Follow up with a moisturizer like Hydra-Pure Oil Free Moisture by Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare and you’re on your way to better skin. |
