The announcement of the Twilight Saga: New Moon
Soundtrack has us doing a little detective work. If these
bands were all chosen to paint the background for certain
scenes, what clues can we piece together about the final
cut? Soundtrack curator Alexandra Patsavas told the New
York Times that she intentionally wanted to choose dark
songs to reflect a "more somber movie" than the first.
Listen closely, you just might learn something...(And keep
your ears peeled -- the soundtrack drops October 20th.)

Song: "Meet Me On the Equinox"
Death Cab for Cutie offers up a stormy romantic ballad that paints a pretty familiar picture: that of Edward creeping into Bella's bedroom. Since that happens to be one of our favorite moments from the first Twilight, we love this song. Front man Ben Gibbard sings, "Let me give my love to you / Let me take your hand / As we walk in the dimming light / Oh darling understand / That everything, everything ends...Let me lay beside you / Darling let me be your man / And let our bodies intertwine." When he says "dimming light," he means "twilight," of course! It's the perfect song to accompany a moment of love and longing, and it's complicated, just like Edward and Bella's relationship.

Song: "Friends"
English rockers Band of Skulls, featuring bassist Emma Richardson and guitarist Russell Marsden, play chunky, boot tapping rock 'n roll. Their yet-to-be released song "Friends" will most likely support the anticipation of an action scene, because build up is something Band of Skulls does best. We're envisioning a pulse-pounding moment leading up to Edward fighting off evil vamps to save Bella.

Song: "Hearing Damage"
With Thom Yorke penning for Twilight, we can only imagine a soaring moment of solitude, deep thought, and possibly an epiphany. We find the song's title pretty intriguing -- perhaps it's inspired by Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood's temporary hearing loss? Or maybe it's a double meaning: is the song about difficulties in hearing one's own heart? Is Bella trying to choose between Edward and Jacob?

Song: "Possibility"
Lykke Li, the frothy electro pop singer from Sweden, is also taking on a
Twilight track. We think she writes good songs about puppy love, crushes,
and heartbreak: will it serve as the soundtrack for a kiss between Edward
and Bella, or will it accentuate a moving moment between Bella and Jacob? |

Song: "A White Demon Love Song"
A love song for a white demon? We like it. (Perhaps a dedication to the Volutri?) It sounds ominously promising, and since The Killers tend to go as big as the lights on their native Las Vegas strip, we think this one could even serve in the climax scene.

Song: "Satellite Heart"
Anya Marina was once a fledgling actress, before she tossed her film career aside for one in music. From what we know about Anya, we're expecting a pretty searing ditty about being scorned. Since she's got a knack for writing about being on the losing end of love, we're crossing our fingers for a pretty righteous heartbreak song. And since we know that New Moon begins with Bella nursing a broken heart after Edward's swift departure, we can picture Bella playing it pretty loud in that purple-toned bedroom of hers. |

Song: "I Belong to You (New Moon Remix)"
With lyrics like "I can't find the words to say / But they're overdue / I've traveled half the world to say I belong to you," we can't help but picture this when Bella travels to Italy. And because this song has already been released, we know we're in for some serious and heavy-handed emoting. Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy even gets intensely operatic when he moans in French over an angelic backing chorus. The effect? "I Belong To You" will paint a pretty and painful background for all that teenage lust. |

Song: "Roslyn"
Could the indie duo's offering "Roslyn," be a take on "Rosalie," the most beautiful, vain, and selfish of all the vampires? Bon Iver's atmospheric folksy-ness, fused with whimsical trippy-ness of St. Vincent will most likely yield a lovely cautionary tale about the perils of self-obsession, or a quirky, beautifully weird love song. |

Song: "Monsters"
What began as just a small side project from Longwave, guitarist Steve Schiltz is about to become a huge deal: Twilight's music team scooped up this tiny act -- and while they're small, their sound is huge and epic. Perfect flying music for a cinematic soar over the firs of Forks. |

Song: "Slow Life"
The acclaimed Brooklyn chamber pop group Grizzly Bear can pull off a pretty sweet melody with crunching guitars and strings. Given their sad and beautiful sound, they might just set one of the most interesting, gorgeous and moody scenes in New Moon. |
