We can't help it: when we see a story online about a new celebrity weight loss secret, we click! We DVR The Biggest Loser and tear out Cooking Light recipes for tasty lo-cal meals that we want to try. Somehow our hunger for what's new in the world of diet tricks is almost stronger than our hunger for diet-unfriendly foods. So we have a new read to recommend for those of you who want to learn how to lose weight in an easy, safe, long-lasting way. Sensa, aka The Sprinkle Diet, triggers the brain to tell you you're full, has been an obsession of ours since we read about it in the New York Times a few months ago. The world-renowned doctor who created the plan, Alan Hirsch, M.D., wrote a book outlining the phenomenon.

Sometimes diving into a book that explains the science behind something can be like plunging into a waterless pool – but thankfully The Sensa Weight-Loss Program held our attention span and we floated right through it. Dr. Hirsch explains why Americans' waistlines are expanding and why fad diets don't work (they're too restrictive, for example). And he delves into some of his research of olfactory (smell) disorders and the development of Sensa Tastants, which, through multiple studies and 25 years of research, have proven to curb hunger and promote lasting weight loss. (The map at left shows which states (the darker ones) have higher obesity rates.) |

We love the approach of not giving up things we crave – it's more about portion control – so we can have Cheetos, but we don't have to yarf down the whole bag. The good doctor also provides a list of foods that will help keep you fuller longer (Oatmeal! Potatoes!), along with more than 30 recipes that incorporate these foods. The Apple-Spice Oatmeal will quickly become a daily breakfast staple; the Huevos Rancheros are so easy and tasty that they will be a standard for weekend brunch; and we'll make a big batch of the Chicken Salad with Cranberries to put in wraps for weekday lunches. We also learned some great new exercise tips and ways to burn calories that don't include traditional exercise. (Simply sitting up straight burns more calories than slouching!)

You can learn more about how Sensa works here; but the gist is this: You sprinkle salty Tastants on your savory foods and sweet Tastants on the sugary ones – they are tasteless and signal to your brain that you're full. And then you put down the cheesy poofs! The success of this product is because it's gradual (crazy crash dieting NEVER works), it's not limiting (food should still be pleasurable!) and it can be maintained for life. And that's a diet plan we can live with.
The Sensa Weight-Loss Program is available November 3rd; pre-order it now at sensaweightlossprogram.com. |
